Minimalism
has been a strong force in womenswear in recent seasons, and this subversive spin on the style is modern through and through. For Pre-Fall 16, clean, long lines and oversized, exaggerated silhouettes ruled the roost…masculine in fit but kept feminine by soft and gentle shapes…tying in nicely with the current mood for genderless dressing.Although some designers played around with prints and patterns, like pinstripes at Acne, the structure of the clothes remained the dominant force. Oversized coats, the first staple of the trend, were virtually everywhere…Sportmax, MM6 Maison Margiela, Chalayan, Ports 1961…and in keeping with the minimalist aesthetic, detailing was kept sparse, with just one feature button or zip. The other hero piece of this trend was the trouser…flowing, long and loose flares were seen at Edun, Calvin Klein Collection and Joseph, whereas designers like Osman and Ellery played with proportions, sending cropped, wide-leg pants down the runway.
[URIS id=61669]HOW TO GET THE LOOK…
The two key principles of this trend are simplicity and shape, so that means work with a basic colour palette of greys, blacks, whites and neutrals, and keep your silhouette relaxed…skinny fit is not your friend here. An oversized coat is the easiest way to dip your toe into the trend, but go long on top of long with layering to really nail it.
