The new bakery has just opened on the old Decatur site
London’s bakery boom is showing no signs of dying down as a brand new one has just opened in the arches on Tilbury Road in Leyton, right by Leyton Midland Road station. Win’s, run by founder Jack with his girlfriend Sophie, has just gone permanent in the area (joining neighbours like Chop Shop Tavern, Swirl, and Libertalia Brewing Company), after popping up at markets for the last few years.
Win’s is inspired by the local family bakers Jack would visit with his nan as a child growing up in the north west, the kind that are going out of business up and down the country. “It seems like bakeries are leaning towards pastries that you eat with coffee,” explains Jack. “We are trying to elevate and bring back the traditional items like pasties and pies.”
He’s combining those influences with his time spent working as a chef at Manteca and as a butcher to create his sausage rolls; pasties, with fillings like cheese & onion and hot chicken with spicy margarita rim; pies, like venison, root veg & Libertalia Knuckledust porter; and milk bun barms filled with porchetta, tonnato sauce and rocket. You can head down there to stock up on baked goods on Saturdays, with Sunday openings likely on the cards.
Willy’s Pies started life in Leyton way back in lockdown so hopefully the area will be as successful a launch pad for Win’s.
