The 22nd of June is Windrush Day, a celebration of the arrival of HMT Empire Windrush and its Caribbean passengers in Britain in 1948. That year the British Nationality Act provided citizenship to people from the Commonwealth and over the next twenty years, hundreds of thousands of migrants, known as the Windrush Generation, came to these shores. Windrush Day is an opportunity to celebrate British-Caribbean culture and honour the contributions that the Windrush Generation made to this country, and there are lots of events you can get involved with.
Windrush Day at the National Maritime Museum
The National Maritime Museum in Greenwich is hosting a packed programme of Windrush Day celebrations. You’ll be able to play board games, listen to panel discussions, catch film screenings, enjoy music performances, check out a food culture exhibition and more. Best of all, it’s totally FREE to attend.

Windrush Day in Lewisham
There’s a full week of Windrush celebrations happening in Lewisham this year, including Caribbean dancing with Nzinga Dance Troupe; community storytelling led by Lewisham Black VCS Network; carnival headpiece and Caribbean flag craft making; arts workshops and more.

Windrush 26 at Brixton House
Brixton House is hosting a number of events across June to commemorate Windrush Day 2026. There’s an exhibition from The Futurists honouring the Windrush generation through family photos; the Come Mek Me Larf comedy special with Curtis Walker, Felicity Ethnic, Shabba Kariem and Kayleigh Lewis; Caribbean music and dancing with Bringing the Vibez and more.

Windrush Day in Haringey
There are a whole host of activities and events taking place across Haringey to mark Windrush Day this year. You can catch screenings of 4U2 Newsmag documentaries; soak up the sounds of steel pans at the Blockorama Steel Pan Festival; explore Tottenham’s Black history on a walking tour; share stories over a Caribbean-style afternoon tea; and more.

Windrush Day Warmup at QUEERCIRCLE
Join The Queer Domino Project at QUEERCIRCLE for dominoes, games, including an introduction to Ludi, food and conversation on the eve of Windrush Day. The event is also marking the launch of The Domino Effect, a peer-led research project documenting queer Caribbean life, culture and community in the capital.

Windrush Festival
After a two-year break, the Windrush Festival is back in town and this time it’s going east to Mudchute Park. Expect a banging soundtrack, live performances, food from home style kitchens and street food stalls, tropical drinks, a vintage car hangout, and culture talks.
