Ready to get your Christmas tree up now? Here’s where to go and buy one
When it comes to Christmas trees, a plastic one might win in the convenience stakes (although it does require storage space) but it’s hard to beat the pure holiday vibes that a real tree brings – proved by the fact that you can get candles with that specific real tree scent. Also, it is even Christmas unless you’ve dragged a deceptively heavy tree through the streets of London and into your house?
Whether you want a 12-foot whopper freshly felled from a pine forest or you can only fit a mini tree in your tiny flat, these are the best places to buy a Christmas tree in London.
Pines & Needles – this Scottish-born operation has been going for almost thirty years, in which time founders (and brothers) Sam and Josh have grown Pines & Needles to over 30 locations in London. With outdoor stores everywhere from Brent Cross to Putney to Victoria Park, there are plenty of places for you to pick up a Nordmann Fir, Norway Spruce or pot-grown Fraser Fir.
Columbia Road – Christmas trees start appearing at East London’s famous flower market at the end of November/start of December. Normally only open on Sundays, the market normally opens for late-night festive shopping midweek in the run-up to Christmas – great if you want to avoid the weekend rush.
Battersea Flower Station – this independent and super cute garden centre in SW11 is worth a visit any time of year, but come Christmas it’s the best place in the area to pick up a potted or free-standing tree, and they deliver locally too.
Camden Garden Centre – as well as being a great garden centre, stocked with a variety of plants and accessories, including Nordmann Firs, Noble Firs and Norway Spruces come end of November, Camden Garden Centre also operates as a social enterprise, providing training for long-term unemployed young people.
Clickmas Trees – as the name suggests, Clickmas Trees operates mainly as a delivery service, bringing fresh cut Nordmann Firs, as well as stands, lights and decorations, to you, but if you want to go and check out the trees in person, they’ve got stores in Crofton Park and Kennington.
The Chelsea Gardener – go bougie with your tree this year by getting it from The Chelsea Gardener. As well as picking out the finest fir, you can get all the bits to finish it off thanks to the impressive selection of ornaments, decorations and gifts on offer at its Christmas shop.
Greenwich Christmas Trees – South East Londoners can browse the Greenwich Christmas Trees team’s selection of firs at its spot at on the corner of Straightsmouth & Roan Street but they’ll also deliver, with an expanded radius of SE postcodes for 2023.
Green Elf Trees – launched in lockdown to help people with their Christmas prep and to get out-of-work entertainers and musicians into employment, Green Elf Trees has grown year on year, delivering more sustainable British trees across the country. For every tree sold, a charity donation can be made to on your behalf to Mind, Great Ormond St Children’s Hospital, British Red Cross, Refugees at Home, Crisis or Dogs Trust.
Shoots & Leaves – the Shoots & Leaves team handpicks the best Nordmann Firs, ranging from 3ft to 12ft, from farms across the country and then offers them for delivery and installation, or collection from Eel Brook Common, Little Brook Green, Acton, Cleveland Park, Elthorne Park and Hampstead Heath. And for every tree sold, a fiver is donated to the local organisations the business supports.
