| PROBLEMS PROBLEMS

The best track of the week comes from LA-based newcomer Frankie, who apparently wants to “bridge together the sound of Stevie Nicks and Joni Mitchell with Alanis Morissette and The Spice Girls”. It’s tough to say whether she’s achieved entirely what she was aiming for with her debut track ‘Problems Problems’, but what we are left with is a song that feels like a preppy, pop version of Banks – think the almost motown-lite vibe of 2014 rising star Ariana Grande’s debut, just gone a bit dark and quirky.

KINDNESS | SOME THINGS NEVER SEEM TO FUCKING WORK

A dark, haunting cover of Solange’s fantastic TRUE EP track, Kindness channels White Stripes singer Jack White to bring an completely new vibe to this deliciously bitter and almost viciously honest break-up anthem.

TEAR COUNCIL | ANYWHERE

The brainchild of Matt Van Schie of Van She and Du tonc and Touch Sensitive’s Michael Di Francesco, Tear Council’s debut track is a blend of wistful vocals, snappy synths and a gorgeous melody that sends us on a journey we never want to return from.

MARIKA HACKMAN | OPEN WIDE

Taken from her debut EP We Slept At Last – released on February 16, ‘Open Wide’ has got us clawing at the walls for more from Marika Hackman. Although the dark lyrics and on-the-money vocal delivery would be enough to make any track, what really elevates this for us is the genius guitar riff that feels as though it was torn straight out of the early 70s. You’ll know what we mean once you hit the play button…

I AM HARLEQUIN | KILL THE NIGHT

Dropping on February 23, the German-born singer’s follow-up to her breakout track ‘Wild One’ sees her crashing a middle-aged ladies bingo night while on a desperate hunt to find a place she can shake off the week’s stress. It’s a joyous little anthemic pop track that could persuade even the hardest dancefloor critic to throw caution to the wind and bust some serious moves.
