Howard Shore’s Lord of the Rings score is one of the genuinely great pieces of film music, and this November you can see the first film play out on a 60ft screen at the O2 with the whole thing performed live underneath it.
It’s the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra plus the Crouch End Festival Chorus and the Trinity Boys’ Choir – more than 200 musicians and singers in total – conducted by Ludwig Wicki and keeping pace with the cut, note for note. It’s the trilogy’s 25th anniversary, which explains the scale of it.
Fair warning that it’s a long sit, the film runs the best part of three hours before the interval, but hearing a couple of hundred people play the Shire theme and the Moria sequence in a room is a different thing entirely to it coming out of your telly. Two performances only, matinee and evening on the same day, so move quickly if you want a decent seat.
