Artworks by Tschabalala Self and Andra Ursuţa will be coming to Trafalgar Square’s Fourth Plinth in 2026 and 2028, respectively
For 25 years, the Fourth Plinth in London’s Trafalgar Square has been showcasing some of the best work in contemporary sculpture; today, the newest commissions were announced. After going against fierce competition in 2024’s Fourth Plinth shortlist, Lady in Blue by Tschabalala Self and Untitled by Andra Ursuţa have been revealed as the winners.
The Fourth Plinth commissions began in 1999 when Ecce Homo, a life-size sculpture of a man in sanded polyester resin, by Mark Wallinger was presented as the public art project’s inaugural piece. Since then, other many other renowned artists – including David Shrigley, Yinka Shonibare and Antony Gormley – have been selected to create something for the central London site.
As of 2026, Lady in Blue by Tschabalala Self will be installed on the Fourth Plinth. The bronze and lapis lazuli statue depicts a young, metropolitan woman of colour, designed to encapsulate the modern ‘everywoman’. Then, in 2028, Untitled by Andra Ursuţa will begin its residency. This translucent piece appears to be a shrouded, anonymous figure on a horse that’s both “a ghost of history and a parody of itself”.
