Travelling Through Time: The Best Vintage Travel Experiences in the US

Although actual time travel is impossible (for now), that doesn’t mean you can’t visit bygone eras—at least a pretty authentic version of them!

The United States is packed with places and experiences that let you relive the good ol’ days. But before hitting the road for a retro American adventure, be sure to apply for a US ESTA. Once that’s sorted, you’re all set to explore some of the country’s most iconic sepia-tinted experiences—read on for six of the best!

Cruise The Legendary Route 66

No list of retro road trips would be complete without the legendary Route 66. Built in 1926, this iconic highway stretches from Chicago (Illinois) to Santa Monica (California) and is the ultimate symbol of the Great American Road Trip.

The entire route is about 2,448 miles (3,940 km) and can take anywhere from two weeks to a month, depending on your pace and interests. If you have less time, you can also start in other iconic points such as St. Louis (Missouri) or Amarillo (Texas).

For an authentic experience, hire a classic convertible or muscle car, crank up some Elvis tunes, and hit the road. Along the way, make pit stops at vintage gems like Roy’s Motel & Cafe in Amboy, CA or Delgadillo’s Snow Cap Drive-In in Seligman, AZ, for a true taste of mid-20th century America.

On the final stretch in Yermo, CA, don’t miss Peggy Sue’s 50’s Diner. Order a burger, pick a song on the jukebox, and enjoy the retro vibes.

While, the best way to experience Route 66 is in a classic American car, if that’s not possible, don’t worry—you’ll still have plenty of chances to see one or two at this next stop…

Admire Vintage Cars at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance

For vintage car lovers, the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in California is the ultimate event.

The Concours d’Elegance was held in 1950 as a side event to a sports car race, but spectators liked it so much that, over time, it evolved into one of the most prestigious car shows on the planet. This isn’t your average car show, either—entry for cars is by invitation only, and the vehicles are judged on authenticity, condition, and elegance.

At the show, you can see everything from pre-war luxury rides to iconic mid-century sports cars, Japanese concept cars, Vintage cars from the early 1920s, and much more.

In 2024, more than 200 cars from 16 countries competed in the concours, with the 1934 Bugatti Type 59 Sports winning Best in Show.

See Old-School Vegas

Las Vegas has always been about glitz and glamour, but there’s a special magic about old-school Vegas—which can still be seen to this day!

Before the advent of giant casinos and mega-resorts, the heart of Las Vegas was along Fremont Street. Today it’s home to the Fremont Street Experience, a pedestrian-only area with neon signs, street performers, and live music that channels the golden age of Vegas.

While here, be sure to visit the Golden Nugget, which has been shining since 1946, and check out the massive 27 kg (60 lb) gold nugget on display. Just across the street is Binion’s, home to the first World Series of Poker tournament—why not try your luck at a game or two?

Be Dazzled at The Neon Museum

Can’t get enough of Las Vegas’ neon glow? If so, be sure to add The Neon Museum to your itinerary! Nicknamed the “Neon Graveyard,” this outdoor museum is home to some of Las Vegas’ most iconic signs, from the Stardust Hotel to the Moulin Rouge. In fact, there are more than 200 signs on display.

Although the museum offers tours during the day and evening, the real magic happens after sunset. When the signs light up, you’ll feel like you’ve been transported straight back to Vegas’ heyday.

Rides on a Retro Cable Car in San Francisco

After your neon-lit adventure in Vegas, it’s time for something different in San Francisco. The city is especially famous for its charmingly historic cable cars, which were introduced in the 19th century and still climb the steep hills to this day.

Hop on a tram to Fisherman’s Wharf or Union Square for a classic ride. For the full vintage experience, stand on the cable car’s footboard, feel the wind in your hair, and watch the iconic streets of San Francisco roll by beneath your feet.

Catch a Flick in a Retro Drive-in Movie Theatre

Relive the charm of the 1950s with a night at one of America’s remaining drive-in movie theatres. These nostalgic spots let you enjoy a movie from the comfort of your car and are perfect for those craving a retro vibe.

One of these theatres is Harvest Moon Twin Drive-In in Gibson City, IL. Opened in 1954, this drive-in cinema is still going strong—grab a snack and enjoy a movie under the stars.

Over in Belleville, the Skyview Drive-In hosts film festivals, themed movie nights, and special events celebrating classic cinema. Some drive-ins even feature movie marathons from the 50s, 60s, and 70s, offering a real throwback experience.
