Christmas starting to poke it’s little festive head through the bleak and dreary days we thought it might be nice to throw around some ideas for prezzies. Here’s our top three debut albums of 2013 that definitely need to be in your collection, if they aren’t already…

Savages, Silence Yourself

An album that is regarded as one of the most important debuts in recent years having received a Mercury Award nomination and reached number 19 in the UK Albums Chart. If you are thinking that this is merely post punk resurrected and repackaged in the form of four females then you are very much mistaken. The shear aggression and passion that cuts through by sonic annihilation of this record is one that deservedly has had Savages as the talk of the town. The music is furious, intense and feverishly addictive.

Drenge, Drenge

Teenage boredom can lead to all sorts, imprisonment, parenthood or even 15 minutes of fame on Jeremy Kyle. Thankfully for the Sheffield brother duo it led to the creation of Drenge and a debut album that has fleshed out the wounds in which small town Britishness offers. The record plays big on violent and an often disturbing outlook of aggression with a twist that makes it strangely familiar. And that’s just the lyrical content, the amount of punishing riffs, insane distortion, pounding drums put together with killer hooks is absolutely thrilling.

Swim Deep, Where the Heaven Are We

We’re not all doom and gloom! Exploiting everything fruitful that pop has to offer are sparkly B-town grunge band Swim Deep, who offer to whisk you off to a dreamland of utter delight. They may taking inspiration from those who have passed but the kids today are raving about it. Released back in August this peaked at number 20 in the album charts and gave us indie kids a little smile to show that guitar music ain’t dead yet.
