This tiny shopfront is quietly serving some of the most legit Korean baked goods in town
If, like the rest of London, obsessed with all things Korean, you’ll want to get down to Dabang in Angel (and then check out this list of Korean recs from Rollin Joint). The tiny bakery is serving up a range of goods, like traditional twisted donuts (kkwabaegi) topped with cinnamon sugar or pistachio, for £1.50 that you don’t see many other places around town.
The salad sandwiches – fillings like egg & potato and fried chicken served in a sweet doughnut-like roll – are not to be missed, and you’ll also want to pick up some of the bulgogi croquettes if they have them too. The menu also includes tteokbokki rice rolls, kimbap, dumplings, and the namesake dabang coffee, which is sweetened with condensed milk.
Dabang is a great example of the ‘newtro’ trend that’s huge in Korea right now, where retro fashion, food, drink, music and culture is refreshed with a modern interpretation. Before the coffee shop scene took off in Seoul, dabangs (establishments that served non-alcoholic drinks), functioned as gathering spots for artists and writers, similar to a Parisian salon.
As well as serving food from its own shop, Dabang also had a residency at The Foxglove pub just down the street – this looks to have finished but we’re hoping more pop-ups are on the way because the food really does bang.
