The Wellcome collection is a great place to explore free exhibitions and this is one of their most powerful yet.
‘Tenderness and Rage’ explores HIV and AIDS, from the height of the UK’s epidemic in the 80s and 90s to the continuing global impact of HIV today. It shows stories of protest and care through a collection of photography, film and archival materials. The exhibition’s centrepiece are two photographic series by artist Gideon Mendel: ‘The Ward’ which documents the lives of patients on AIDS wads at Middlesex Hospital in London and ‘Through Positive Eyes’, which shares the voices of HIV activists worldwide.
