Get hands-on with your bevs
There’s a time and a place for a perfectly poured single pint but a big group table in a lively restaurant isn’t it. Why bother with individual drinks (and make the waiters and bar staff carry them) when you can order a round in one go and in one vessel? Enter the beer tower. Not only does it make getting the beer from the barrel to your glass easier – towers vary in size but typically hold between four to five pints each – you can control the tap, which is way more fun than pouring from a jug. And if you’re eating in a restaurant that does properly spicy food, you’ll be glad that a frosty beer refill is just at the end of the table. Here are the best beer towers in London.
Speedboat Bar
It’s high energy – and high heat – at Luke Farrell’s Speedboat Bar, which takes inspo from Bangkok’s Chinatown and the speedboats that race along Thailand’s canals. Like at his other restaurant Plaza Khao Gaeng, there’s some seriously spicy food on the menu, so best to tackle it with a Singha beer tower on the table.
Oh Gee
Korean fried chicken may be the headline act at Oh Gee, the pop-up restaurant at The Hoxton, Shoreditch created in collaboration with 101 Chicken’s Byungtae Ahn but the drinks are just as attention-worthy. As well as soju bomb drinks and spicy margs served out of toy fire extinguishers, you can get any of the beers, including Camden Hells, Cass Lager and Hoxton Pale Ale, served in a 2.6L beer tower.
Plaza Khao Gaeng
Plaza Khao Gaeng, at the top of Arcade Food Hall on Tottenham Court Road, is inspired by the curry over rice restaurants in Southern Thailand. The kitchen don’t pull any punches when it comes to the spice – the Khua Kling Muu is particularly hot – so a Singha beer tower will cool you down nicely.
Brigadiers
This City restaurant is all about Indian BBQ, flowing drinks and live sports. Whether you’re watching the football or feasting on BBQ butter chicken wings and tandoori lamb chops, you can enjoy it with cocktails on tap, Indian whiskies and any of the beers, like Cobra, Gipsy Hill, Guinness and Bitburger, in a 2.8L tower.
FOWL
FOWL is the beak-to-feet spin-off restaurant from the Fallow team, where they’re doing an upmarket take on chicken shop classics, like Szechuan honey strips, koji hot sauce wings, buffalo chicken burgers and spice bags, alongside 2.5L towers of pilsner, IPA, cider and Guinness.
