A New Arts Venue Is Opening on a Boat in Canary Wharf

Theatreship is launching next week as the UK’s largest floating theatre and cinema

There are a few floating restaurants in London (London Shell Co, Caravel, The Cheese Barge, to name a few), floating hotels, a floating bookshop, and now, we’ve got an arts space to add to the list of buoyant attractions. It’s called Theatreship and it’s about to launch in Canary Wharf with a programme of film, theatre, visual arts and music performance, featuring a mix of local and international talent.

Originally a cargo ship built in 1913, Theatreship took 18 months to convert into its current form and is now home to a 100-seater theatre, a cafe & bar and exhibition space. Its debut event, a film festival Cinema Unbound: The Creative Worlds of Powell and Pressburger, will kick off on Wed 24th January. This will come as part of BFI’s UK-wide celebration of the filmmaking partnership between Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger. Alongside screenings of some of their greatest films, there’ll be live performances of dance, opera, and music; short film screenings; and talks from artists, producers and filmmakers. All of which has been curated especially for the festival.

About the opening, Theatreship’s project director Inigo Lapwood says “We’re so incredibly excited to be opening this beautiful ship up to the public. It’s a unique space, in a really special part of London, and we really hope our programming reflects some of that. The docks have always introduced new things to the UK, and we’re keen to continue that with events that highlight new and interesting voices, and bring new audiences to more established artists.” Find more info on what to expect from the upcoming events programme here.
