THE WEST END IS GETTING A BRAND NEW THEATRE

For the first time in 50 years, the West End will welcome a new build, @sohoplace, to its roster of theatres. Owner Nica Burns asked theatre creatives and lovers alike what their dream theatre would include, which informed the facilities she decided to include at this new site. Now, 12 years later, the state-of-the-art @sohoplace is set to land in town this autumn with a range of features setting it apart from the West End’s classic theatres.

The 602-seat auditorium will be more flexible, as opposed to the traditional proscenium arch stage, and has been designed to have perfect sightlines and acoustics to optimise the experience. The developers have also been keen to help foster an intimate actor/audience relationship, meaning that there are no seats more than six rows from the stage as the auditorium is curved. And backstage, a creatives’ floor has been built with a rehearsal room, actors’ Green Room, bar and terrace – all elements that aren’t typically found in the same building as the main theatre. Of course, there’ll be a public restaurant and bar too, which will be open from midday to midnight. Theatre-goers, rejoice!
