The old Pizza East site on Portobello Road has got a new resident
Public House Group, who operate The Pelican in Notting Hill, The Hero in Maida Vale and The Bull in Charlbury in the Cotswolds, has opened another London spot, and this time it’s not a posh pub – well not yet anyway, as there is one, called The Fat Badger, is planned for the upstairs space soon. Canteen opened on Portobello Road with very little fanfare but its Italian menu seems to be a big hit with locals already.
Jessica Filbey and Harry Hills (both ex-River Cafe) are leading the kitchen, with Max Houghton overseeing the day-to-day operation, and they’re making good use of the wood-fired oven left over from the space’s previous tenant, cooking up dishes like:
- Vitello tonnato
- Caponata
- Gnocchi with duck ragu
- Cavolo nero risotto
- Vongole spaghetti with bottarga
- Gorgonzola & fig pizzette
- Panzanella
- Beef shin ragu with polenta
- Tomato pappardelle with pecorino
- Whole John Dory with salsa verde
- Cherry & almond tart
If that sounds up your street, you’ll have to find a lunchtime to go as it’s currently only open from 12pm – 4pm on weekdays, and it’s walk-ins only, though dinner service will be launching soon.
