The new spot, The Tamil Crown, will lean more into the pub side of things
The Tamil Prince opened in Islington last year when an ex-Roti King duo, chef Prince Durairaj and Glen Leeson, took over and reinvented a Barnsbury pub. It was – and is – a total hit, so it’s no surprise that the team is already expanding with a second site set to open this autumn. The new spot, which is called The Tamil Crown, will also be in Islington and will be more of a traditional pub with a menu similar to the one that’s turned the OG into such a favourite.
The Tamil Crown will be the kind of spot you’ll head to for a pint on a sofa with snacks like okra fries, chicken lollipops, banana chips and roasted masala cashew nuts. But it’ll also function as a restaurant, with a menu that features revamped versions of The Tamil Prince’s classics. Expect the likes of:
- Beef masala uttapum with spicy coconut chutney
- Lime leaf-roasted chicken with pineapple chutney and Bhel puri
- Karaikudi crab masala, a whole roasted crab for the table
- Coconut prawn moilee, a rich and creamy coconut curry
- Aubergine curry
On Sundays, they’ll serve up an Indian-inspired twist on the Sunday roast with options including roasted lamb shank, masala roast chicken, masala roast beef and banana leaf thali. The roasts will come alongside trimmings such as potato and green peas thokku, turmeric roast potatoes, coconut lentil cabbage, mixed vegetable avial, Yorkshire pudding, spiced fried cauliflower, rice, roast carrots and beetroot raita with a sambar curry on the side. There’s a lot to look forward to with this one.
