Not only is the Rio Cinema one of the best indie cinemas in London, it’s the longest-running cinema in the UK, having been screening films since 1909. This year the picturehouse is celebrating 50 years of being run by and for its community, and it’s going big with a six month long anniversary programme.
RIO FOREVER will kick off with a launch party curated by Jeremy Deller, Sports Banger and Doc’n Roll on 17th April. Then there’ll be an eclectic programme of events, including a homage to Clara Ludski and a plaque unveiling for this pioneer of early British cinema, and a series of 35MM film screenings, where filmmakers will choose a film to introduce and discuss on the night, like Asif Kapadia with The Godfather: Part Two and Dionne Edwards with Bound. Other highlights include Molly Manning-Walker’s presentation of Punch-Drunk Love; a celebration of Prince with Purple Rain on the big screen: and screenings presented by horror film club Category H, Varda Film Club and Uncommon Voices with Tomisin Adejepu.
