Balham’s new neighbourhood restaurant, The Red Duck, is bringing contemporary Chinese classics to South London. This new spot started out as a takeaway-only service, but The Red Duck will finally open its doors to al-fresco diners on 15th April before welcoming us inside on 17th May to a small two-level space featuring an open kitchen.

It’s headed up by Chi San, who after working in the restaurant industry for more than 30 years is pulling together experienced chefs in Chinese cooking for a modern and new approach. Sourcing is at the heart of the menu, with ingredients either supplied locally or coming directly from Japan. It will feature dishes like Stir-Fried Beef with Ginger & Spring Onion (made with HG Walter’s 35-day dry aged rib eye), Crispy Aromatic Duck (from family-owned Silver Hill farm) and Satay Chicken (made from corn-fed poussin). And if you’re veggie, expect the likes of Salt and Pepper Tofu, 3 Mushroom Fried Rice, Hakka Paneer and Beansprout & Peanut Salad. There’ll also be a wine list full of low intervention and organic wines from independent and family-owned producers. Cheers to that.

Opens 15th April 2021
