Max Fishman, the man behind The Quarter Store at the Clapton end of Mare Street, which sells goods from local and indie food and drink producers, has recently opened a sister site in the yard of St John at Hackney Church. Like its bigger sibling, The Quarter Kitchen is all about championing local businesses, this time through a cafe menu of coffee, baked goods and Mexican food.
The coffee comes from Origin alongside a rotating selection of guest roasts (they’ve already had Skylark, Crankhouse and Process coffee on the menu) and the Mexican food comes courtesy of Rodrigo Cervantes (formerly of Super 8 Restaurants, the group that includes Kiln, Smoking Goat and Koya). He’s had dishes like morita bean soup with cashew crema & Jerusalem artichoke; chilaquiles aka tortilla chips soaked in salsa verde topped with fried eggs, cheese, sour cream & onion; and confit pork, homemade cheese and chipotle-braised bean gorditas on the menu so far, and breakfast burritos are on the way too. Hackney lunch options just got a whole lot more interesting.
