After a big anniversary year in 2022, the Pride in London parade is back for 2023
After a pandemic-enforced two year hiatus, the Pride in London parade finally returned to the streets of the capital last summer, and with 2022 marking the 50th anniversary of the first Pride in London parade, it was an extra special occasion. In honour of the milestone, that parade traced the event’s original route, passing by locations key to the LGBT+ movement in this country.
It started at Hyde Park Corner, (where the first post-march picnic happened in 1972 and where the miners stood in solidarity with the LGBT+ community in 1985) before going down Piccadilly, turning onto Haymarket, going through Trafalgar Square (where the 1972 march ended) and finishing at Whitehall Place – and the same route is being used for the 2023 parade. Speaking about last year, Pride in London CEO Christopher Joell-Deshields said “We were ecstatic to be back on the streets of London in protest and celebration in 2022 with #AllOurPride. We look forward to London’s LGBT+ communities coming together again on July 1st 2023 as we continue to show up for visibility, unity and equality for all LGBT+ people”.
This year Pride in London is running the ‘Never March Alone: Championing Trans Allyship’ campaign, supporting members of the trans and non-binary community in a time where they’re facing more political and media adversity than ever. As part of the campaign, a series of photo and video portraits of the trans and non-binary community and its allies, showcasing their joy, resilience and spirit, will be on display both digitally and in-person across the city. Around 1.5 million people filled the streets last year, and we’re expecting another big turnout for Pride this July.
