bad boy darlings the Orwells return with new single and video ‘The Righteous One’. Featuring considerably less punch and gyration than previous video ‘Dirty Sheets’ (check it out if you haven’t yet), this one is a deceptively simple slow burner that showcases the band members a whole lot more. Keeping with the lo-fi look they’ve been rocking all along, lead singer Mario Cuomo sings “double double double double dare” while a double image of him swims in front of camera – in black and white of course. One of his faces has glazed-over eyes, the other a piercing glare that’s looking right at you. This disconcerting technique is used to full and glorious effect in the video, which is essentially a hazy mish-mash of faces, hands, drums and guitars, all superimposed, in a split screen, or fading into one another. The video ends with the band members all kind of blending together in one shot.

This single shows us what we kind of knew already, that the Orwells are on the way up, and that they’re doing it on their terms. This band has got David Letterman calling for an encore, and they are honestly one of few bands around right now that genuinely sound and act like real life rock and roll! Maybe you’re lucky enough to have tickets to see the band and their Iggy Pop-esque stage antics on their sold out tour in the UK this February. Catch our interview with them back in December here.
