The Okan Team Has Opened a Japanese Diner in King’s Cross

Oton is serving comforting Japanese dishes in Coal Drops Yard

When Moto Priestman first arrived in London in 1998, sushi was the only type of Japanese food that the city was really familiar with. She brought a taste of Osaka, her hometown (known as the kitchen of Japan), to the capital with Okan and her Osakan okonomiyaki. Okan now boasts three sites (two in Brixton, one on the South Bank) and one takeaway kiosk (in Coal Drops Yard), and she’s just opened a sister site, Oton, in Coal Drops Yard too.

Set up with Takuma Shoji (ex-Dinings SW3), who also hails from Osaka, Oton is a Japanese diner that’s all about simple, home cooked-style dishes – think rice bowls and grilled fish – made with sushi-grade ingredients. Alongside a range of Japanese teas and sake, the menu includes:

  • unagi eel and salmon don
  • unagi eel and tamago egg
  • chirashi sashimi don
  • aubergine steak and tofu with ginger don
  • Hokkaido scallops and ikura with ponzu soy
  • ikura onigiri

If you’re a fan of Okan’s okonomiyaki, yaki soba and onigiri, you’ll want to give Oton a go next time you’re out and about in Coal Drops Yard.
