Cafe Kowloon will be joining Wonton Charlie’s in London Fields
Not content with opening wonton noodle soup bar Wonton Charlie’s in the arches by London Fields station, hospo group 6 of 1 (also behind Mr Bao, Daddy Bao, Good Measure, and Master Bao) is opening a second Cantonese spot at the same location.
Whereas Wonton Charlie’s is designed to be more traditional, Cafe Kowloon, opening behind it in February, will be a more modern Cantonese kitchen, with counter seats overlooking the kitchen and booths with lazy susans. The team is taking inspiration from Hong Kong’s dai pai dong vendors, dim sum houses, and cocktail bars to create a contemporary spin on the city’s rich food culture.
The menu, designed to be served family-style, will include dishes like:
- grilled curry fish ball skewers
- steamed scallops with glass noodles and XO
- beef tendons served two ways
- wok-fried monkey head cheung fun in shiitake XO
- prawn toast with crispy prawn heads, spring onion sauce and Hong Kong chilli oil
- smoked half chicken with spring onion and ginger oil
- Iberico secreto char siu with bitter leaf and grapefruit salad
- Hong Kong French toast with peanut butter crème pâtissière, condensed milk and roasted peanut powder
That will all be paired with inventive cocktails, like the Kowloon Classic (with cognac, vermouth, banana and chocolate absinthe) and the Pocari Sweat Milk Punch (with tequila, yuzu and a foamy milk wash), and a low-intervention wine list curated by Theatre of Wine.
Speaking about Cafe Kowloon, 6 of 1 co-founders Frank Yeung and Abhinav Malde said: “This opening has been a long time in the making, so it’s very exciting to finally see all the site hunting, research, and development come to life. We’re especially thrilled to be joining such a vibrant neighbourhood — surrounded by some amazing hospitality spots — and we hope to become a meaningful part of the local community. This marks a big step in the journey for 6 of 1: a new site, a new corner of London, and our first move beyond Taiwanese food. It’s a project fuelled by real passion from the whole team, and we can’t wait to open the doors.”
