The Lavery Review | “A Georgian Townhouse Gets a Modern Menu”

This restaurant has got the look down, and also has food to match

Nestled in the heart of South Kensington, a new restaurant The Lavery has just opened its doors. Based in the home and studio of the painter Sir John Lavery, the building has been meticulously restored to its former beauty as it begins its next chapter as a restaurant and events space. But it’s not just a looker, the food has substance too thanks to former River Cafe chef Yohei Furuhashi who’s heading up the kitchen.

Eat This

Get started with the ciabatta and olive oil, which you can also use to scoop up the tasty sauce on their cheesy fondant asparagus with parmesan. You can’t go wrong with snacking on the salt cod and crispy polenta either but the showstopper starter is definitely the buttery Scottish scallops on a bed of cime di rape.

The menu changes daily but if the paccheri, a rich pasta made with peppers, and the monkfish with cannellini beans are on there, get them. Both dishes were light, fresh, and transported us straight to Italy.

However the dish of the night was undeniably the chocolate bean mousse – creamy and indulgent, sprinkled with crunchy sea salt, a dash of olive oil and finished with a cherry. Perfection.

Drink This

We loved the classic cocktails with a twist, like the Mezcal Mule and the Elderflower Negroni, but there’s also an extensive wine list on offer, and the staff are more than happy to help out with pairing suggestions.

Why Go

Thanks to all the galleries and museums in the area, this part of London is filled with chain spots so The Lavery is a welcome change, and worth taking a trip to even if you’re not checking out an exhibition.
