Melanie Brown, the woman behind The New Zealand Cellar, is opening bistro and wine shop The Laundry in Brixton. Taking over Walton Lodge, The Laundry will keep the Edwardian building’s original walls and tiled floors, mixing in vintage furniture, antique mirrors and both counter and banquette seating, with further space on the terrace next to Brixton Village.

Open all day, The Laundry will be serving everything from baked goods in the morning to brunch to dinner and cocktails, with a focus on quality ingredients treated simply. That means you can expect dishes like Hereford beef tartar with beef fat potato chips, croque madame on sourdough, chicken liver parfait with duck ham and pickled mushrooms, and Vesuvius tomato with aioli and cheddar on a crumpet. The wine list will be accessible, with the main list of 50 bottles featuring old and new world regions, and Mel’s own collection New Press – three wines that represent New Zealand. And if you’re after something a bit fancier, there’ll be a selection of wines served from The Cleaner’s Diary, the bistro’s premium private cellar collection.
