Kudu is coming home, sort of. Amy Corbin and Patrick Williams, the duo behind London’s South African-inspired restaurant, relocated Kudu to a site in Marylebone last September, but this November they’re heading back to South London with Braai Bird, a wood-fired rotisserie chicken concept taking over the former Kudu Grill site on Nunhead Lane.
Named for the South African tradition of feasting around an open fire, Braai Bird brings a more casual, neighbourhood take on Kudu’s ingredient-led cooking, and joins a wider rotisserie chicken revival that has swept across London over the last couple of years. The menu, led by Patrick, centres on wood-fired rotisserie chicken, slow-cooked for maximum char, served with house-made South African sauces and sharing sides. An open kitchen at the rear gives diners a view of the rotisserie itself, with a short drinks list of house cocktails, beer and South African wines.
We’ve always loved this site, and Liga Piraga has kept the design true to it, earthy, tactile interiors and artwork by South African artists preserving the original restaurant’s warmth.
