In the run up to Notting Hill Carnival, we’re highlighting Caribbean culture across London. The next spot on our list is Jerk Centre, a family run Caribbean food truck on Hoxton Street. It’s been around for over 30 years, and from the stream of smoke billowing out the chimney and the sweet smells coming from the kitchen, you know it’s going to be good.
The team serve up all the classics, including curried goat, prawn curry, fried dumplings and fried plantain. We went for the jerk chicken – perfectly smoky and with crisp edges from the grill, finished with a punch from the Scotch Bonnet sauce – and the veggie chickpea curry – hearty and full of rich spices. Both were served with a generous portion of rice and peas and coleslaw.
It’s a convenient lunch spot for those working in the area, and the lengthy queue shows it’s a favourite. So get down quick – look out for the big Jamaican flag – and get in line!
