The Hart has the Public House Group’s Midas touch
We’re sycophants for the Public House Group – we’ve been to all their venues and, quite honestly, we’ve loved them all. The latest one in Marylebone follows a similar formula to The Hero and The Fat Badger: a casual pub below and dining rooms above, with white tablecloths, roaring fires, country pub-style interiors, and elevated pub food. It’s a true “gastropub,” even if that phrase has become a little overused in the last 10 years. The difference here is the location – set on Chiltern Street, this pub is set to be their sceniest yet.
Eat This
The menu at The Hart features familiar British pub dishes made with ingredients from British farmers, producers, and even fresh produce from their own Market Garden at Bruern Farms.
The snacks are generous, so if you go heavy on them, you might want to share a starter. We enjoyed the sardines on toast – almost like a sardine ragu on a hefty slice of bread – and the Jenga-like stack of cheese straws. From there, we shared a starter of smoked eel with celeriac (though we had a bit of FOMO when we saw the next table’s raw beef and crisps).
For mains, the kedgeree and the steak and potatoes didn’t disappoint – the steak came covered in a rich jus, perfect for winter. We ended with a banoffee pie to share.

Drink This
You’ll want to have a drink pre- or post-dinner in the bar below; if you can get a spot, that is. Alongside some great British beers, there’s a very good champagne by the glass (this is Chiltern Street, people): the Devaux Cœur de Blanc, a label we’ve spotted on the list at a few other great places lately.
There’s even a good orange wine by the glass from another of our favourites, Judith Beck, a pleasant surprise given the location. We remember a time not so long ago when ordering a bottle of orange wine in Chiltern Firehouse meant the sommelier had to visit your table to explain what orange wine was before they would serve you it. Jokers!
Why Go
The Public House Group is becoming a sign of quality, and The Hart is no different. It’s good cooking, great ingredients, attentive service, decent drinks, and a lovely aesthetic, and we like that they’re not trying to reinvent the wheel.
