The Great Sausage Roll-Off will bring together baking talent from across the UK to battle it out for the title of best sausage roll
IT’S BACK! It’s been a long three years, but The Great Sausage Roll-Off is finally rolling back into town – and it’s almost time to crown a new champion. As ever, the showdown will take place at The Red Lion in Barnes and this year, 16 chefs from across the UK will compete to win the coveted award of best sausage roll.
The reigning sausage roll maestro is Alan Chilton, chef at The Bower Inn in Somerset, whose 2020 entry comprised Old English pork with coriander, cumin, turmeric, ginger, caraway, chilli and garlic. The 2023 shortlist of competing chefs includes the likes of Sam Seedhouse of The Bird in Hand in Knowl Hill, Eden Allsworth of The Ferry House in Sheerness and Edward Kilty of Kilty&Co in Liverpool.
Deconstructed rolls are banned, as is shop-bought pastry, and entries must be rolled and made on the night. That rules out anything from Iceland – looks like we won’t be entering. Sausage roll fans who wanna try the competing bakes themselves can bid on samples, with all money raised going toward the support service Hospitality Action.
