The Dover Street Counter Review | “The Dover Now Has a Younger, Naughtier Spin-Off”

The Dover Street Counter brings a luxe American diner feel to Mayfair

The Dover – one of London’s sexiest restaurants – has opened a new spot just a stone’s throw from the original. And while The Dover is all about ice cold martinis and a grown-up, see-and-be-seen atmosphere (Rishi Sunak apparently eats there, though he’s someone we definitely don’t want to see), The Dover Street Counter has a slightly younger, more playful edge with better food too. Expect elevated Americana diner grub, a long list of margaritas, and whispers of a hidden invite-only club downstairs (you didn’t hear it from us).

Eat This

The menu leans into classic Americana, but with a sexier twist thanks to thoughtful presentation, chic plates and glassware, and the occasional sprinkle of magic dust. It follows a diner-style format with sandwiches and salads, plus an all-day breakfast sandwich and even a tuna melt.

Start with the purple potato crisps served with San Marzano tomato salsa and lime sour cream – you won’t be disappointed. Follow with the French Dip and a side of disco fries (word of warning: they contain “disco jus” – don’t ask us). To finish, there’s a warm apple and rhubarb pie with custard.

Drink This

Begin with a glass of fizz – it’s only right when you’re in Mayfair – then move on to one of their margaritas: pineapple, strawberry, even lychee. After that, head to the classics and enjoy the drink of the moment: the Cosmo.

Why Go

It’s a reasonably priced option in Mayfair, which is a rarity. The menu is familiar and not overly fussy, and right now it’s still relatively easy to get a table (though probably not for long). It’s the kind of spot you pop into for a quick bite and maybe one drink… and the next thing you know it’s 2am on a Monday and you’re stumbling out of the basement club. Guilty.
