The BFI Is Celebrating the Medium of Film at This Festival

The BFI Film on Film Festival is back at the Southbank for its second edition this June, celebrating the medium of film itself. Every film screened at the festival will be projected from a print, showcasing both the aesthetics of film and the skill needed to work with it. The festival opens with the original 1977 version of Star Wars, which hasn’t been shown in public for decades, and will close with the pilot episode of Twin Peaks, with Kyle MacLachlan joining onstage.

In between, you can catch 70mm screenings of Amadeus and Empire of the Sun; 35mm prints of Bill Forsyth’s Local Hero and Vernon Sewell’s Strongroom; an original 1929 nitrate print of Luis Buñuel and Salvador Dalí’s Un Chien Andalou, the oldest print ever projected to UK audiences; and a 2018 15 perf/70mm IMAX print of 2001: A Space Odyssey, created under the supervision of Christopher Nolan and playing on Britain’s biggest cinema screen at the BFI IMAX for the first time. There’ll also be workshops, talks and free events happening across the festival too, so it’s a must for all you cinema lovers.
