Taking on Veganuary this year? These are the dishes you’ll want to try

If you do want to rein it in a bit after the excesses of the festive season or you want to take on a new challenge, January is the perfect time to try cutting down on meat and dairy. Luckily going vegan, whether it’s just for the month or for the whole year, doesn’t have to mean eating leaves – unless you like leaves mind, there’s nothing wrong with a bit of salad.

The plant-based options available to us have improved drastically in recent years, and though veganism may not be trending in the same way it once was, there’s still an appetite for more thoughtful and considered consumption of animal products. There are a ton of Veganuary recipes out there that you could try, especially if you’re making a New Year’s resolution to cook more, but if you don’t trust yourself to be let loose in the kitchen, head out for one of these Veganuary specials instead.


Acme Fire Cult’s Veganuary Menu

The Acme Fire Cult crew already hero vegetables year round but they’re firing up the grills for a spesh five-course Veganuary menu this year, featuring a mix of signature dishes and new creations. Feast on smoked beetroot with pine nuts, raisins, black garlic & vegan creme fraiche; fermented squash hummus & macadamia; coal roast leeks with pistachio romesco; tandoori celeriac with chickpea puree, green chutney & cashew cream; and chocolate ganache with boozy prune & vegan creme fraiche for £32 per person.

Marugame Udon’s Vegan Bowls

Marugame Udon is adding two new, limited-edition vegan bowls to its menu for Veganuary, a Creamy Kitsune Udon with an umami broth topped with sweet tofu skin, and a Pumpkin Katsu Curry, with fried panko pumpkin and available with either rice or udon. There’ll also be pumpkin, courgette, sweet potato and kakiage (carrot, onion & potato balls) tempura on offer too.

Crosstown’s Veganuary Doughnuts

Crosstown bakes some spectacular vegan treats all year round, but they’re going all out for Veganuary 2024 with THREE new recipes. First up is the Pistachio & Rose Doughnut, which is made with Crosstown’s signature vegan sourdough, topped with rose icing, filled with pistachio & rose custard and topped with crunchy pistachio crumble. Then there’s the Coffee, Cardamom & Coconut Doughnut, featuring vegan filled with coffee and cardamom custard, dipped in coconut glaze and coated in coconut flakes. Last but not least, the third new addition to the menu is the Matcha & Rhubarb Dough Bite, Crosstown’s very first vegan matcha flavour, made with vegan sourdough and rhubarb & sweet strawberry compote filling and topped with matcha and green tea glaze and a sprinkling of strawberry crumble. Veganuary has never tasted so sweet.

Tonkotsu x Club Mexicana’s Birria Ramen

Japan meets Mexico at Tonkotsu this Veganuary thanks to this collab ramen with Club Mexicana. Meriel Armitage has provided her vegan birria consommé, layered with guajillo, ancho, chipotle and arbol chillies; tomatoes; cumin; and garlic for the ramen base, which is then topped with Tonkotsu’s konbu & shiitake broth and homemade noodles. The bowl is finished with CM’s vegan ‘beef brisket’, crisp tortillas, pickled chillies, salsa and lime.

Pastaio x Meera Sodha’s Kimchi Spaghetti

Stevie Parle has enlisted the help of vegan cook and food writer Meera Sodha for his Veganuary special this year. The dish combines Pastaio’s fresh spaghetti with kimchi, tomato, gochugaru (Korean red pepper powder) and black sesame breadcrumbs. For every plate sold, Pastaio will donate 50p to The Trussell Trust, so you’ve got even more reason to order it.

Pizza Pilgrims x Hot Tongue Pizza’s Arugula-la-land Pizza

Pizza Pilgrims is bringing a bit of California sunshine to the capital with a little help from LA pizzeria Hot Tongue Pizza. The Arugula-la-land pizza features the signature PP 72-hour double-fermented dough base, coated in sesame seeds and topped with Californian Sungold tomatoes, the Hot Tongue ‘Drip’ (cashew sauce with lemon and nutritional yeast), fresh arugula, aka rocket, and a balsamic glaze.

Norma x Max La Manna’s Tasting Menu

Sicilian-inspired restaurant Norma is bringing in chef and author Max La Manna for a plant-based, low-waste tasting menu to run in January. Max has worked with Norma’s Executive Chef Giovann Attard to create a five-course menu that showcases seasonal produce from the UK and Italy, with dishes like Julienne Bruno Burrella with ‘nduja’ carrot top gremolata, fried basil & toasted walnuts; roasted carrot raviolo with beetroot cream, pangrattato & crispy capers; and coconut panna cotta with citrus sorbet and aquafaba meringue. The pair will launch the menu with a supper club on 4th January, with it then running for the rest of the month at £65 per person.

Flat Earth x DabbaDrop Pizza

Sustainable pizza spot Flat Earth is teaming up with DabbaDrop once again for an Indian-inspired plant-based pizza, featuring Flat Earth’s heritage grain dough base and DabbaDrop’s black dal along with spiced roasted squash, plant-based mozzarella, cavolo nero, pickled red onion and homemade cashew cheese, with tamarind chutney on the side. And £1 from every pizza sold is being donated to local Hackney organisation St Joseph’s Hospice.
