THE BEST CHRISTMAS SANDWICHES
Are the Christmas sandwiches the best bit of the festive season? Probably. It’s that time of year when eating sarnie after sarnie for lunch is totally acceptable and not even lockdown will get in the way of that. Here are the best of the best to get in your gob.
The Christmas S+Dwich | Sons + Daughters
The Coal Drops Yard sarnie shop is back with another festive cracker. With proper thick slices of bread and a very deep fill, this sarnie includes roast Swaledale turkey, spicy cranberry & smoked bacon XO, bread sauce mayo, pickled red cabbage, watercress and the all-important marsala gravy ‘moistmaker’ layer. Now that’s how you do a sandwich.

The Vegan Sprout Sandwich | PAUL
This year’s PAUL’s best Christmas sarnie is vegan, stuffed with the much maligned brussel sprout. Inside a white baguette you have roasted sprouts, spinach, beetroot with balsamic vinegar, a crispy potato rösti, vegan mayo and sweet onion marmalade. Potato inside bread? That’s the spirit of Christmas right there. You can get this in-store or have it delivered via Uber Eats or Deliveroo.
Christmas Lunch | Pret a Manger
Pret always turns out a reliable Christmas sandwich. The ratio of fillings to bread is on point, so it doesn’t fall apart when you wrap your chops around it; the port & orange cranberry sauce isn’t overly sweet; and it has crispy onions, which everyone knows totally makes the sarnie. Pret is also hot Christmas food this year, including a Pigs in Blankets Hot Roll with caramelised onion chutney and mustard mayo. And if you’re not near a Pret, you can get it all delivered via Deliveroo.
Truffled Egg & Honey-Roast Ham | Marks & Spencer
If turkey isn’t doing it for you this year, M&S has a suitably festive alternative with their new truffled egg & honey-roast ham sarnie, with a whole poached egg right in the middle. Yep, poached eggs go in between the bread now and not just on top of them. 5% of sales from the entire festive range will be donated to Shelter, so buying more than one is totes acceptable.
Wasteless Christmas Sandwich | GAIL’s
We know what you’re thinking – it looks a little flat. You never judge a book by its cover and you should therefore never judge a sandwich by its height. This is a bad boy, a smoked turkey and cheese on the bakery’s Wasteless malted wholegrain sourdough that has a healthy smearing of chipotle aioli along with homemade bacon jam.
The One With The Gravy Layer | Starbucks
The Starbucks development team have clearly been watching reruns of Friends because there’s a lot of similarities between their new Christmas sarnie and Ross’s infamous Thanksgiving one, right down to a moistmaker layer in the middle. We don’t really care whether they pinched the idea or not though because this baby is seriously tasty. You’ve got turkey and ham hock on the top, butternut crush and red cabbage on the bottom and that gravy-soaked sourdough layer in the middle. Make sure to get it toasted, that crunch just sets everything off perfectly.
