THE APPLEBEE’S FISH TEAM TO OPEN TAPAS JOINT LA GAMBA ON THE SOUTHBANK

Brothers Jack, Harry and Matt Applebee know what’s when it comes to seafood, having run Applebee’s Fish in Borough Market since the late nineties, and now they’re turning their hands to Spanish food with La Gamba. Opening at the Southbank Centre this February, the tapas restaurant will make the most of the connections the brothers have with the best independent seafood suppliers as well as use British ingredients to serve up their take on classic Spanish recipes.

The menu is taking inspo from across Spain but with a particular focus on the northwest region of Galicia, with dishes set to include:

  • Wild mushroom & truffle croquetas
  • Galician octopus with boiled potatoes & paprika
  • Iberico pork cheek empanadas
  • Cornish crab and fennel tostada
  • St Austell mussels cooked in a rich albariño and chorizo sauce
  • Galician picanha steak with truffle and San Simón cheese
  • Burnt Basque cheesecake

With a wine list that journeys from Rioja to the Douro River, a Spanish gin selection, an interiors palette of stone, terracotta and sea blues, plus a waterside location – yes it’s the Thames and not the Atlantic coast but still – La Gamba is all set to bring a real slice of Spain to the Southbank.
