The 42-Year-Old Thai Restaurant Run By a 75-Year-Old Legend | Neighbourhood Watch

The Pie Crust Cafe is truly a Stratford institution

Pie Crust is an East London cafe that’s been serving the people of Stratford family-style Thai food since 1984. Run by 75-year-old Sujan, her husband and her 65-year-old sister, the restaurant spans three generations with her sons and nieces working there too.

As part of our Counter Culture series we followed the family for the day, watching them make everything fresh from scratch, dance with their diners and even see repeat customers who’ve been coming there for decades.

The family dynamic really is something special – there are family photos on the wall alongside their daughter’s A-level art, making it feel more like a living room than a restaurant. The record player, often spinning Sade and Engelbert Humperdinck, sets off the old-school vibe.

And the food more than matches up. We particularly rate the Thai red curry and spring rolls, and as everything is made in-house, they sell out fast – as son Gazza says, “they’re not a McDonalds!”. If you’ve not been down yet, consider this your sign to visit.
