But if you were one of the lucky few to have a key to unlock the butcher's door then you were in for an even bigger surprise. Behind the door, laid out across four floors, was a 1920's speakeasy complete with gaming tables, bath filled bars, cinema room, live music, dancing and plenty of Blind Pig cider. Our favourite flavour was the Rum and Poached Pear - served to us in a wrapped piece of newspaper, of course! What's more, to mark the occasion, Blind Pig commissioned the Blind Pig Collective, made up of three artists, a photographer and film making duo, to create an original piece of work each themed around the spirit of the 1920’s. The three pieces of art work, by Adam Simpson, Laura Carlin and Shonagh Rae, are very different in style. We were big fans of Adam's work as it felt just like the venue itself, seriously we could have been one of the people in the painting. He'd created a scene that evoked the hidden goings-on behind a seemingly anonymous building. As we left we heard a group of people outside asking if Blind Pig Butcher’s was a place serving up pie and mash - little did they know!
