Red Hook, on the South-West side of Brooklyn, is one of our favourite areas of New York. It’s very laid back, even by Brooklyn standards, has some incredible places to eat and drink, and it’s waterside location gives some epic views across to the Statue of Liberty. You can get the ferry there from either Wall Street or Dumbo and it’s well worth at least a day of your time in New York. Now, down to the important stuff – where are the best restaurants in Red Hook? Hometown Bar B Que Hometown is undoubtedly the jewel in Red Hook’s crown, rated by pretty much everyone as the best BBQ in New York. get the juicy brisket sandwich and a half rack of the jerk-seasoned pork ribs, both of which are BBQ perfection. And then the wild card, and potentially the best item on the menu - the lamb belly banh mi – a glistening bun stuffed full of soft lamb belly meat and given some crunch with veg, and bite with a sweet a sauce. Steve’s Authentic Key Lime Pies After eating at Hometown, first take a walk, then visit Steve for an incredible Key Lime Pie. You won’t regret it. Ample Hills Ice Cream Factory Ample Hills make the best ice cream in New York and in Red Hook they have a huge new factory and scoop store. Head in to see how the ice cream is made and then grab a couple of scoops – they even have a flavour exclusive to Red Hook. Red Hook Winery This winery and tap room has a huge selection of local New York wines. Grab a glass or go for a tasting menu where you can try four different wines for $18 – you can then buy a bottle of your favourite to take home. Brooklyn Crab As far as settings for dinner and drinks go, Brooklyn Crab has got it down to a tee. With an elevated beach shack vibe with great views of the river and Lady Liberty, this is the place to tuck into – you guessed it – crab. As well as crab cakes and big whole boiled crabs, there’s a whole lot more, including fried shrimp, oysters, and clams.
