system | boiler room x gaika

Musician and performance artist Gaika has teamed up with Boiler Room to create SYSTEM, an art installation at Somerset House that tells the history of sound system culture in London, on the 70th anniversary of Windrush. The piece includes archive material from places like the Black Cultural Archive and the BFI, and it’s designed to explore the themes of immigration, blackness, cultural expression and technical power. It’s interactive too, meaning you can plug into the installation and play music, which will then be fed into the archive.

Every Tuesday throughout the installation, Somerset House will host SYSTEM: Next Gen Sounds, featuring new sound system talent like Natural Mystic, Tudor Lion and Thali, whilst on Thursdays a different collective, such as Aba Shanti, Release Da Riddim and BBZ, will host parties in the lead-up to Carnival.
