When the mercury finally starts rising 20°C in London, it’s a big deal. As Londoners, we spend most of the year hiding out from the rain, shivering at bus stops and bundling up under fluffy jumpers and enormous puffer coats.
But, it’s also a bit of a mixed bag. Yes, the sun is shining, everyone’s a bit cheerier (it’s worth celebrating having survived all those months of little to no daylight), festivals are bursting back onto the scene and it’s the season of al fresco drinking. On the other hand, the Tubes reach dangerous temperatures (“you wouldn’t even transport livestock in these conditions”), unpleasant smells abound and the rates of those al fresco drinks will be hiked all the way up. Still, at least it’s not winter.
Spring has sprung in the city, and it has brought the first heatwave of the year along with it. This week, expect sun-drenched days and temperatures of around 20 – 24°C. So, it’s not going to be a proper scorcher, but it’s warm enough to start catching those summer vibes a little early.
Over the following months, there’s a lot going on, from major food fests and indie markets, to outdoor exhibitions and open-air screenings.
Some of the year’s most anticipated music festivals are still to come, including All Points East which’ll be in town this August with some HUGE names taking to the stage (we’re talking Loyle Carner, Kaytranada, Mitski, LCD Soundsystem and more). And, of course, Notting Hill Carnival will be back on over the late summer Bank Holiday. But, in the meantime, if you just wanna get out there and soak up the sunshine, here’s everything you need to stay cool and enjoy the warm weather in style.
