Here’s How to Stay on the Lower East Side Without Breaking the Bank

Having tried the Moxy East Village, we were keen to see how they’re doing it on the Lower East Side

The Lower East Side will forever be one of the coolest neighbourhoods in NYC and if you want to be right in the thick of the action, you can’t beat the Moxy Lower East Side for its combination of affordability (rates start from $179) and geography.

There’s a lot going on before you get anywhere near one of the 303 bedrooms. Minimalist this is not, with the designers drawing on the Bowery’s history as a music and entertainment district – there’s neon signs, mask sculptures and old-school candy dispensers around the reception, and day-to-night lobby cafe and bar The Fix is a real vibey space. There’s animal sculptures and jewel-toned furniture in the cafe space, a fluted glass and brass bar to the right of it, and a great atmosphere in both.

And that’s not all as there are four more venues, created in collaboration with Tao Group Hospitality on site; Japanese restaurant Sake No Hana, piano lounge Silver Lining, rooftop bar The Highlight Room, and basement club Loosie’s. We stayed at the hotel over a weekend and it was buzzing, with people having a good time in every single space.

Design is also at the forefront up in the rooms, with industrial accents, pendant lighting, terrazzo floors in the shower, bulb-lined mirrors and pops of red. They’re cleverly laid out to maximise the space too – the shower and loo cubicles have sliding doors, there’s a slim sink and vanity unit in the room itself, there’s a rail system that runs behind the mirror and underneath the TV (so there’s no wardrobe), a desk top folds down from the same rail installation, and there are cubby holes under the bed for luggage storage.

You won’t be able to empty your entire suitcase, hang all your clothes and put all your bits out, especially if there are two of you, but there’s certainly enough room for you not to be clambering on top of each other.

We’re fans of Moxy because the hotels manage to find a great balance between location, amenities, fun and price point. If you’ve got a load of Chinatown and SoHo spots starred on Google Maps, or you’re planning some nights out in the city that never sleeps, this is the place to stay.
