st james’s masterclass | the dukes martini

St James’s London is home to a diverse range of brands, from retailers to restaurants, but each one shares a passion for craftsmanship and skill. And now the residents of St James’s are letting you in on their secrets with a curated programme of events. For the next event in the St James’s ‘One of a Kind’ series, there’s an exclusive Martini masterclass at DUKES Hotel.

The DUKES Martini is iconic; it was a favourite of James Bond author Ian Fleming – he also invented the Vesper at the bar too – and it’s known as one of, if not the best, version of the cocktail in the world. It’s still served tableside on a trolley that’s been at the bar for over a century, so if you want a slice of that old-school glamour, DUKES is where you come.

The masterclass is led by Alessandro Palazzi, who’s been managing DUKES Bar since 2007 and is without doubt an absolute legend in the cocktail industry. He even toasted the queen and launched the Jubilee celebrations aboard the ship HMS Diamond in 2012.

Alessandro will give you the chance to dive into the fascinating history of both the Martini and the Vesper. You’ll be able to sample a range of spirits and vermouth, learn what makes the perfect garnish, and discover the small twists Alessandro has added to the classic preparation made famous by Salvatore Calabrese, with hot canapes and bar snacks to keep you going – they are very potent drinks after all.

There’s only space for eight guests, so this is a super intimate affair and a chance to learn from a real legend in the cocktail world. Tickets are £125 plus a 12.5% service charge, and include the Martini masterclass as well as a very special St James’s tote bag. If you want to book, give DUKES a ring on 0207 318 6574 or drop them an email.
