Will there be the same queues as seen at the last opening?
Sophia Handschuh, aka Sourdough Sophia, started baking bread from her kitchen and delivering to locals with her husband Jesse during lockdown. The response they got was so positive that just eight months and one crowdfunding campaign later, they moved out of the house and into a pastel pink-fronted micro-bakery in Crouch End. As well as sourdough breads made using organic locally grown milled grains and fermented for 24 hours, the bakery has become known for its fresh baked cruffins, croissants, brownies and cheesecakes.
It’s been so popular over the last few years that Sourdough Sophia expanded again last spring, opening a second bakery on Essex Road (just down the street from Anna Higham’s Quince Bakery) in Islington where locals eagerly queued to get through the door on the opening day. Now she’s onto her third site and she’s staying in north London for it, taking over the old Creamery site in Highgate.
Announcing the new bakery on Instagram, Sophia said, “Rather than opening up here there any everywhere, Jesse and I always want to open sites in places that we that we know and that has a community that really resonates with us and our culture. This location is a pretty special one for Jesse and myself as this was our home turf when I first moved to London before we lived in Crouch End and we spent many a weekend strolling around here and enjoying the local park and beautiful views of London in our early 20s!”
