It’s the latest spot from Julian Denis
LA-native Julian Denis, who’s also behind Facing Heaven and Easy 8 in London Fields, is bringing a taste of his home to Stokey with his next venture. Johnny Boy’s, opening this July, is his love letter to the family-run neighbourhood joints that sprung up across Southern California as different immigrant communities were established. As he explains, “Greek families made a living cooking Mexican food for their neighbours, and vice versa. Flavours became borderless, blurred, and melded into something greater than the sum of their parts, serving the neighbourhood as a whole and offering something for everyone”.
Johnny Boy’s will look the part, with colourful interiors, Formica tables and seating booths. Open for dinner Wednesday – Sunday, the menu will include dishes like:
- crab tostada with crab-mayo, pea salsa, and carrot escabeche
- pastrami dip with mustard pickles and consommé
- patty melt with caramelised onions, Russian dressing, Swiss and American cheese and rye bread
- chicken dinner – fried chicken with mac salad and Hawaiian roll
At weekends, the daytime menu will include a range of burritos, including all-day breakfast and carne asada, plus steak & eggs with hash browns; chilaquiles verde with chicken, beans and fried egg; French toast with whipped butter and maple syrup; and a homage to London, a deluxe breakfast plate with bacon, sausage, hash browns, eggs and toast – which’ll also be on the dinner menu too. There’ll also be Maple Bar and Old Fashioned donuts for those wanting a sweet treat, and, as is the American way, bottomless filter coffee.
You can pair all that with cocktails like the Michelada (beer, clamato, salsa inglesa, tapatio, chamoy), the Orange-Bang Sour (bourbon, vanilla, orange, bitters) and the Carajillo (mezcal, horchata, cold brew), beers like PBR and Modelo, and a sharp wine list. California, here we come.
