Shoreditch Has a New Hi-Fi Bar and Kitchen

Mad Cats has set up shop on Redchurch Street

Clearly Londoners just can’t get enough of listening bars – Hausu set up shop in Peckham earlier in the autumn and now Mad Cats has opened in Shoreditch. Founded by couple Ed and Daniella, Mad Cats looks – and sounds – the part, with low lighting, lots of exposed brick, an extensive record collection on display and vintage speakers dotted around the space.

You can soak up the sounds, which can range from funk to electronica, with sake or a smart cocktail – the list includes serves like the Midnight Pounce (made with mezcal, Campari, ginger and hot honey), the Peach Whiskers (with gin, calvados, peach liqueur and cinnamon), and The ZaZa (made with tequila and za’atar liqueur).

Food-wise, it’s an eclectic offering, with Lebanese crudites and a mix of Middle Eastern and Japanese flavours on the small plates menu, with dishes like:

  • otoro handroll with yuzu kosho, truffle and caviar
  • cauliflower salad with kohlrabi, avocado and almonds
  • octopus carpaccio with tomato juice and Aleppo pepper
  • crab salad with mustard frill, cucumber and orange tobiko
  • chicken skewers with kecap manis
  • 48-hour beef short rib with mole sauce
  • seasonal fruit cheesecake

Though Mad Cats is definitely a vibey late-night spot, if you swing by during the day you’ll find coffee and cakes on offer, plus a spin on a roast on Sundays.
