A new free biennial festival is coming to the Royal Docks this autumn with over 50 events responding to the area’s waterscape and its development as a cultural hub. The theme for the inaugural Royal Docks Originals festival is Metamorphosis, with the event celebrating the stories, history and transformation of this corner of London. Artists and collectives including Compagnie Carabosse, YARA + DAVINA, Graphic Rewilding and Chila Kumari Singh Burman MBE are showcasing pieces at the festival.
Burman, known for her vibrant neon artworks that explore cultural identity will be displaying a brand new piece, ‘Royal Reflections and Sweet Hope’ at Royal Docks Originals. It includes neon pieces depicting ideas of transformation, decolonisation and the Docks’ heritage of sugar and ice cream factories on one side of a TfL IFS Cloud (Cable Car) kiosk, with a large wave collage on the other. Her tuk tuk, decorated with Hindu deities, bindis and tigers will also be on show, alongside her full-size neon tiger sculpture ‘My Tiger Janu’.
