THE CURZON MAYFAIR TO SCREEN A SPECIAL PROGRAMME OF FILMS, SUPPORTING ITS CAMPAIGN TO SAVE THE CINEMA

The iconic, Grade II-listed cinema is still fighting to keep its residency at the historic site

Last year it was announced that the Curzon Mayfair may be forced to close. Since 1934, 38 Curzon Street has been home to the cinema group’s flagship site, but the building’s landlord has submitted plans to Westminster City Council that would see it turned into a new mixed-use space, ending the cinema’s nearly century-long run. This hasn’t gone down well, of course, and the campaign to ‘Save Curzon Mayfair’, which calls for fans to object the landlord’s application, has been ongoing since – and the support has been pouring in.

At the time of writing, an online petition organised by Councillor Patrick Lilley to protect the major film hub has just over 20,000 signatures, while high-profile endorsements from Steven Spielberg and Tilda Swinton have turned this into an internationally recognised campaign. But, the application status is still pending and no definitive decision has been made just yet.

We’re fans of the Curzon Mayfair which, as well as being an excellent spot for a movie, is a fantastic piece of London architecture. So, we’re glad to see they aren’t backing down and are putting on a ‘Save Curzon Mayfair’ programme of special screenings this autumn. The season will showcase some of the best films shown by the cinema over the years, kicking off on Sun 10th September with a 4K restoration of Max Ophuls’ La Ronde, followed by the likes of La Dolce Vita and Parasite.

If you want to help save the legendary cinema, support the campaign by grabbing tickets below, or submit your objections to the redevelopment plans here.
