Sample sales happen in London all year round but most of the big designers, like Mulberry, Alice Temperley, Acne, Hugo Boss, Peter Pilotto, Shrimps, Alexander Wang, Paul Smith, Christopher Kane, Versace, and Diane von Furstenburg, hold them when the fashion seasons have come to an end, so in the spring and in the autumn. However there are often secret sample sales that get announced at the very last minute, so it’s worth always keeping an eye out on the brands and designers you like. And there are dedicated sample sale venues in London like The Box in Hackney, Showcase and The Music Room in Mayfair, which host designer sample sales all year round.
Sample sales are a great way for brands to get rid of excess stock, sample garments made during the production process and even runway clothes before they start to sell the next season’s lines. Because the clothes sold at sample sales are old season, they often come massively discounted – usually between 50% – 90% off RRP – so that makes them a great way to pick up designer labels at a fraction of the cost – you could even bag a wedding dress for a bargain price at a wedding dress sample sale.
It’s worth bearing in mind that sample sales for big brands are very popular and get very busy, so it’s not uncommon to queue, and the venues don’t provide changing rooms either so you won’t be able to try anything on before you buy. Many sample sales accept both cash and card but some can be restricted to one method of payment, so it’s always good to check before you arrive.
