An exhibition celebrating celebrating the artists and institutions of the capital is opening at the gallery this summer
Obviously we think London is the best city in the world, and this summer Saatchi Yates is agreeing with us by putting on an exhibition called London Rules the World. With the show, the gallery will highlight how the city has constantly evolved but always remained a centre of groundbreaking art.
Starting with post-WWII paintings from masters like Francis Bacon, Frank Auerbach and Lucien Freud, the exhibition will move through modern art in London, from David Hockney’s pop art to the YBAs of the nineties to the new generation of artists emerging today. Works from the likes of Damien Hirst, Jenny Saville, Lynette Yiadom-Boakye, Bridget Riley, Paula Rego, Gilbert & George, Tracey Emin, Peter Doig, Jake & Dinos Chapman, Oli Epp, Chris Ofili, and Slawn will also be on display.
As well as celebrating artists, the show will also honour the institutions that have helped the city’s art scene to thrive with a supporting programme of events. There’ll be wine tastings with St. JOHN, a fashion show from Central Saint Martins grads, an afternoon tea with the Royal Academy, a collab tea towel with Nicky Haslam and more.
Speaking about the exhibition, Phoebe Saatchi Yates and Arthur Yates said: “Since opening the gallery all we have heard is how London as an art destination is being surpassed by cities like Paris, Milan and Dubai. We wanted to put on an exhibition that celebrated London history from the Modern British giants to the established superstars to art graduates breaking new ground.
“We were particularly excited about exhibiting younger artists within a grand historic context, how through wars, cultural movements, recessions, a pandemic, Brexit, London’s artists continue to triumph. Beyond the exhibition, we are collaborating with institutions, from grand to grassroots that play a part in the success of London’s creativity and Art. As a gallery we want to build a dialogue between the art world and the public.”
