The newly retired tennis superstar is making his first foray into fashion
Uniqlo’s known for being a pretty mean collab machine – with recent partners including Marni, Sofia Coppola and Mame Kurogouchi, among many others – and they’re gearing up to release their latest. As part of their ongoing work with UK fashion label JW Anderson, the Japanese high-street retailer has brought Roger Federer on board for a new ‘LifeWear’ line.
Is this a bit random? Maybe. Then again, given the fixation on tennis wear that’s gripped corners of the internet lately (mainly, the TikTok contingent obsessed with a somewhat misguided idea of ‘old money aesthetics’), maybe not. The collection will of course be inspired by the sport that’s made Federer a household name, with a tagline that refers to the pieces as ‘Modern classics, on and off the court’.
Coming to stores this September, the line will feature a range of versatile and unisex active-wear items with prices that range from £29.90 to £99.90. Expect to see pieces designed for the colder months such as a padded parka, fleece jacket, zipped hoodie, lambswool crew neck jumper and a couple of joggers. There’ll also be some lighter pieces, including a polo shirt and shorts, plus a two-way sports bag.
While these aren’t the most striking designs we’ve seen come out of Uniqlo’s designer partnerships, they’re immensely practical with subtle motifs that set them apart from the brand’s core collection. The idea behind the line was to combine Federer’s (which he has described as tending “toward simple, muted tones and classic looks”) with Anderson’s modern take on active-wear. The collection is set to launch in-store and online on Mon 4th September, if you’re looking to give your wardrobe a utilitarian update for autumn.
