Ride Vintage Double-Decker London Buses for Free

Step back in time to London of yesteryear at the end of March by hitching a ride on a vintage double-decker Routemaster bus. The London Bus Museum is hosting one of its heritage days, this time on Route 19, where buses dating from the 1930s to the 1980s will be running alongside the regular daily service – and even better, rides will be totally FREE.

Route 19, which runs between Finsbury Park and Battersea Bridge, making stops in Islington, Piccadilly Circus and Chelsea in between, has been in continuous operation between Highbury and Battersea for almost 120 years. Starting out as Route H in 1906 (from Highbury Barn to Clapham Junction), the route has remained largely unchanged, just being extended either end over the years.

The heritage service will running from 9am to 5pm on Sat 29th March and you can hop aboard at any point on the route, and even though you don’t need to pay for your ride, you might be lucky enough to receive an old-type ticket. As the Routemasters are several decades old, they’re not designed to accommodate buggies or wheelchairs, but the Museum has stated that “our crews will make every effort to help the less able and those with small children enjoy a ride back in time. “
